Problem Solver, Grand Rapids

Mike English

As a "Professional Problem Solver," I design, implement, and maintain systems to host and deploy software applications. Additionally, I maintain Atomic's internal IT infrastructure and provide technical support to all employees.

I work with our software developers to understand an application's needs and lifecycle and design systems to support them. From deployment processes to hosting, to configuration management, monitoring, and automation, I ensure that we deliver the best possible products for our customers.

I co-founded and organize DevOps West Michigan with my colleague and fellow "Professional Problem Solver," Justin Kulesza.

I've done work for a wide array of projects and customers, including international clients such as the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group. The IFC's SME Toolkit project provides resources for entrepreneurs in developing countries around the world. Justin and I are responsible for the continued operation of the web application through which many of the SME Toolkit program's materials are provided.

In my time away from the office, I like to play with new and esoteric programming languages, operating systems, automation and security tools. I take pleasure in setting up new development environments and strive to make everything more portable, repeatable, and secure. I am also keenly interested in the ethical dimensions of new technology, and enjoy reading and thinking about the complex economic, social, and environmental impact it can have on the world.
