Atomic Object Opens Fourth Office in Raleigh-Durham

Software consultancy’s North Carolina expansion builds on 20 years of Midwest success

October 26, 2022

Raleigh, NC: This week, Atomic Object launched its newest office in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Grand Rapids-founded software design and development consultancy has grown into the Ann Arbor, Michigan and Chicago, Illinois markets over the past 21 years.

The expansion into the Warehouse District’s Raleigh Founded workspace is a mark of continued success for the employee-owned firm.

Atomic emerged from the choppy waters of recent years with a stronger team, broader client base, and better financials than ever. Since early 2020, the 90-person company has grown its slate of full-time, onsite software makers by nearly 30 percent, accompanied by revenue growth of more than 45 percent.

Over that time, the firm successfully delivered 76 software products for 57 clients, representing tens of millions in revenue. The consultancy was also recently named a best place to work by Midwest talent platform Purpose Jobs, listed as a top-10 custom software developer in the United States on rankings site Clutch, and awarded as the 2022 West Michigan medium-sized company demonstrating the most excellence in business.

According to Co-CEO Shawn Crowley, geographic expansion creates new opportunities for Atomic Object’s employees and client base.

“Continuing to make Atomic a more interesting place to work for—and work with—fuels our expansion into exciting new markets,” he said.

Co-CEO Michael Marsiglia says Raleigh-Durham, in particular, is an ideal market to grow into.

“We looked for a city that has other successful consultancies, proximity to great universities, some thriving local industries, and a great quality of life for residents,” he said. “Raleigh-Durham checked all those boxes.”

Longtime software makers Taylor Vanden Hoek and Ryan Abel pitched the North Carolina expansion to Atomic's co-CEOs, proposing they lead the new office as Managing Partners.

“They were nervous when they came to us with the idea, but to me and Shawn, it was a gift,” said Marsiglia. “They work well together; they have complementary skill sets; they have tenure; they’re coachable, hungry, and smart.”

Vanden Hoek says she and Abel are looking forward to growing a team and finding success alongside clients.

“Ten years from now, I envision looking around and seeing all these faces that I have yet to meet. I see how each of them is supporting one another in the office to encourage everyone to be their absolute best,” she said. “That would bring me so much joy—to stand there and see that happening around me.”
