Software Consultant & Developer, Grand Rapids

Bekah Cheek

I tripped into the field of computer science after my freshman year of college when I had the opportunity to intern at Blue Medora, a tech company in the Grand Rapids area. At the time, I thought that developers hid in their cubicles and hammered out code for 8+ hours a day every day. While I wasn't interested in a career in technology, the job paid better than nannying for the summer (and college is expensive!), so I took the internship. The team at Blue Medora surprised me. They were sociable, creative, and passionate. As they shared their passion for the field, they ignited my curiosity. By the end of the summer, I had rearranged my entire course schedule to declare computer science as my major; I've never looked back.

During college, I was fortunate to have many job opportunities that grew my knowledge of technology and development (and rid my brain of those silly developer stereotypes). I spent two full-time summers and six part-time semesters at Blue Medora learning about the tech industry and growing my curiosity for different facets of software. I worked in the Mobile Applications and Services Lab at Grand Valley State University and published an iPhone application which has now joined the Bee Informed Partnership's suite of bee research apps. In the summer of 2017, I had an internship at 3M as a member of their Security Technology Services team and learned about corporate IT and the security challenges that large companies face.

I graduated with honors from Grand Valley State University in April 2018 with a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science and minors in mathematics and music.

When I'm not working, I enjoy cooking, playing sports, working out, playing violin, and hanging out with my husband.
